In October 2018 at Mildura, the Victorian Magistrates Court convicted a local funeral director and fined her $10,000 for (falsely) declaring that the deceased’s family had been informed about the proposed exhumation.

In her defence, she stated that she had relied on the de facto wife’s assurances that she would take care of related notifications. What action is the cemetery operator obliged to take to check that an exhumation application has been appropriately notified to the family?
